Astrology is a symbolic language of readable archetypal images, which are the deepest organizing patterns of both the psyche and the cosmos. As the old alchemical saying goes, as above, so below; as within, so without. We can see exactly which archetypes are most important for us to work with in this lifetime, by looking at our birth chart.

Psychological astrology can provide a doorway to self-compassion by helping us accept our true, deep nature – depicted by the blueprint of our birth chart – so that we may provide a loving, connected presence for ourselves (and others). The Universe’s synchronistic web of connectedness can provide a loving, connected presence for us as well.

“The master views the parts with compassion because he understands the whole.”

How can this help me?

Psychological astrology facilitates our individuation, a lifelong developmental process described by Dr. C. G. Jung, in an indispensable and highly specific way, because the birth chart is a unified whole of who we are that shows it ALL – even the parts that aren’t fully conscious to us. This helps us see ourselves more clearly and allows us to be able to take in aspects of our shadow and express the higher versions of ourselves. Its ability to mirror us back to ourselves saves us from our own self-reporting biases and defenses that can distort the truth!

We know from lots of research that self-compassion makes us stronger and more resilient…and allows us to take in negative feedback and deal with difficult aspects of ourselves more directly.

–Neff & Germer, 2012

Besides the unwelcome parts of ourselves we don’t like, our shadow also includes hidden positive resources we couldn’t express in our families due to fear or conflict, which Jung called our golden shadow

“The shadow contains sources of vital energy whose suppression in the unconscious contributes to its destructive, distorting, and corrupting character, yet whose integration permits its regenerative and creative potential to be released.”

–Dr. Rick Tarnas, Cosmos and Psyche

What would we cover during our time together?

Jung, along with alchemists and astrologers for centuries, pointed to the hieros gamos, or sacred inner marriage between Sun (Sol) and Moon (Luna), encouraging us to approach a synthesis of the divine masculine and feminine energies within our Self.

In order to increase self-compassion, balance and wholeness, the goal is for our Self to relate to our own Sun and Moon signs, and help them relate to each other to attain inner integration (dynamic unity). The hope is that we can learn to be present to the tension, as well as work toward a meaningful union between our two parts.

Sol and Luna (from Rosarium Philosophorum, alchemical treatise from 1550)

“Only when compassion is present will we allow ourselves to see the truth.”

–A. H. Almaas

Each astrological part has an unseen counterpart—its opposite that makes it whole. Psychological astrology is about working toward a union of the opposites within us. Over-and under-identification are shadow expressions of the signs/archetypes; over-identification rejects the energy of the opposite sign, and in under-identification, the sign’s opposite is at the wheel.

An important note about fate and free will…
In psychological terms, the archetypes have both positive and negative poles and they can be expressed in ways that are more or less mature, shaped by our level of capacity and consciousness, and the amount of Self-energy, we bring to each moment.

While these tendencies are predictable to a degree, what we as individuals do with the available influences is up to us to choose.
